The Story
The ARC Ensemble (Artists of The Royal Conservatory) presents the third volume in its Music in Exile series, an album dedicated to chamber works by Warsaw-born Szymon Laks. The last conductor of Auschwitz’s men’s orchestra, there is little in Laks’s music that memorialises or even references his wartime experience. His music, largely unknown until ARC’s recording, is witty, urbane and beautifully crafted; the Piano Quintet on Polish Themes a nostalgic tribute to his homeland.
